Band bio - Oxford Mississippi's BLUE VELVET is a five piece band rocking traditional blues tunes. The band's name BLUE VELVET combines the fact it is a BLUEs band, while VELVET playfully refers to the fond nickname of Oxford, the "Velvet Ditch." What makes the band unique is that each player gigs independently as well as being a band member. Their convergence was instigated by vocalist Ms. Effie Burt. Last year she received a sought-after Mississippi Arts Commission Fellowship grant. One of her goals was to segue from jazz singer to blues and back. In March 2026 Burt assembled the band. With an impressive repertoire herself, she nonetheless gives credit to other members of Blue Velvet for introducing her to certain traditional and hill country blues songs.
